A tooth infection usually starts inside the tooth or in the gum around it. It often causes a throbbing pain, tenderness when you bite, a bad taste or a small swelling on the gum. Infections do not clear up on their own, so they always need a dentist, but most are not an emergency.
Go to A&E or call 999 now if you have swelling spreading to your eye, cheek or neck, difficulty breathing, swallowing or opening your mouth, or you feel very unwell with a high temperature. These can be signs the infection is spreading, which needs urgent hospital care.
Speak to a dentist today if the pain is severe or keeping you awake, the swelling is getting bigger, you have a raised temperature, or pain relief is not helping. A dentist can assess the area on video, decide whether antibiotics are appropriate, and tell you how quickly you need hands-on treatment.
Not sure how serious this is?
A UK dentist can assess it by video for £19.99 — usually the same day.
Book a video consultationAntibiotics are not always the answer. They help when an infection is spreading or you are unwell, but the cause, usually a dead nerve or a gum pocket, still needs treating, for example by draining the infection, a root canal treatment or an extraction.
Until you are seen, use pain relief that is safe for you as directed on the packet, rinse with warm salty water, and avoid very hot or cold food. Do not put aspirin on the gum, and do not try to burst a swelling yourself.
With ToothAid you can see a GDC-registered UK dentist by video, usually the same day, for £19.99. If you need treatment in person, we can help you find a practice near you.
