Yes, in the UK a dentist can prescribe antibiotics after a video consultation, but only when it is clinically appropriate. Antibiotics cannot legally be bought without a prescription, and a responsible dentist will not prescribe them just because you ask.
When antibiotics help. They are usually used when an infection is spreading, for example swelling in the face or gum, a raised temperature, or feeling generally unwell, often alongside a plan to treat the tooth in person.
When they don't. Most toothache, including pain from decay or an inflamed nerve, does not get better with antibiotics. Taking them when they are not needed will not ease the pain and adds to antibiotic resistance. Your dentist will explain what will actually help, such as the right pain relief and how soon you need treatment.
Think you might have a tooth infection?
A UK dentist can assess it by video for £19.99 — usually the same day.
Book a video consultationHow it works with ToothAid. You book a video consultation with a GDC-registered UK dentist for £19.99, usually the same day. They ask about your symptoms and medical history, look at the tooth on camera, and decide whether a prescription is right for you. If it is, it is sent electronically and you collect it from a UK pharmacy.
Antibiotics are almost never the whole answer. An infected tooth usually needs treatment such as drainage, a root canal or an extraction. If you need to be seen, we can help you find a participating practice for an in-person assessment at £39.99.
