Wisdom tooth pain at night: why it happens and what helps

3 min read

Wisdom teeth often cause trouble when there is not enough room for them to come through fully. A flap of gum can sit over the tooth, trap food and bacteria, and become inflamed, a condition called pericoronitis.

Like other toothache, it can feel worse at night. Lying down raises pressure in the area and there is less to distract you.

To help get through the night: take pain relief that is safe for you before bed, as directed on the packet. Rinse with warm salty water to clean around the tooth, sleep with your head raised, and keep to soft food. Brush gently around the area even if it is sore.

Speak to a dentist if the pain lasts more than a couple of days, it is hard to open your mouth, you have a bad taste or swelling, or you feel unwell. A dentist can assess it by video, advise on treatment, and prescribe where clinically appropriate.

Go to A&E or call 999 if swelling spreads to your neck or under your jaw, or you have difficulty breathing or swallowing.
